Sunday stroll
Fremont Market.
Fremont. Seattle. Wa.
I’m a summer kind of girl. There are markets around the town nearly every day of the week (if you know where to look), and I literally pop up in bed to start my day with the dawn. Now that it’s officially winter, they’re only around on Sundays. If at all.
Get this: it’s really not about the food. At least not all the time. Half the fun at the Fremont market is discovering unusual trinkets and meeting new people. There’s a wonderful French-speaking couple that come most weeks to sell French antique pieces, personally imported. Most of their pieces are from Grenoble, and it’s really just fun to chat with them about their time spent there. The cool thing about the Fremont Market (or disappointing thing, depending on how you see it), is the vendor turn around. The show runs a rather flexible schedule, so people can come for five weeks straight and then take a weekend off. I liken the hand-hammered silver jewerly to outstanding architecture, on your hand. Then, there’s the tent with a slew of vintage dresses. One rack goes for $3 a piece, and the other for $5 or $10. I find fun dress-up staples here faster than you can say “I wish I had bought that $5 YSL scarf, even if it had a stain,” or “Ibought a stiff white polyester lace wedding gown.” I really did by the gown. It was three bucks. Way too much fun to pass up. Who knows? Maybe I’ll dress up as a toothfairy one day.
I digress. My favorite way to explore this little market is with a mini-caprese sandwhich in hand, courtesy of PCC (www.pccnaturalmarkets.com) the natural co-op. Anita’s also has a cart here. There’s this one fire burning furnce thing that smells delectible when pizza comes out fresh on the street, too. If it’s super warm out, chances are you might find the snow cones table that promises “no corn syrup.” If it’s chilly, just head down the street to the Theo chocolate factory for a tour (www.theochocolate.com). The $9 ticket covers many chocolate samples, too! My friends that have been inside like it a lot. Let me know if you do!
